LP(Long Pool) Charm
This is a pattern that I designed back in the fall of 1998. I was looking for an original pattern that had some very good fall salmon colors, red, black, and orange. I also wanted to give it a little bit of a spey look and feel. At the time myself and a number of my fly tying friends were experimenting with using the red rump feathers from a Golden Pheasant Skin for spey like hackle. The pattern seems to have worked as it caught me a 36" salmon on the first week it was tried. It seems to live up to the old adage of bright fly, bright day, dark fly, dark day, as it worked well on a dark gloomy day. The fly was originally named the Long Pig by a bunch of my fishing buddies. It was named for the pool I was fishing it in and as they said "The Pig" of a salmon it caught. I changed the name because Long Pig just didn't sound right. So I came up with the Joel's Lucky Charm. Since that time I have settled on the LP(Long Pool) Charm. I hope it brings you the same luck as me.
