Here is the first Real salmon I ever caught. I landed one Grilse prior to this on the Stewiake River while fishing for trout. That hooked me on salmon fishing for life!
Isn't that sweet :-) This picture was taken by an old friend of mine Paul Marriner. You may know Paul as a very skilled fly fisherman, fly tier, and author. It was taken at a place called the Snag, which is at the end of Long Pool, on the Margaree River. You might recognize this pool name as it is supposedly the pool the Cosseboom was originally tied to fish. Snag comes from the enormous sunken log right at the end of the pool. You will see below I originated the fly I caught this fish on Paul helped talk me through landing this fish along with Rod MacLeod. For the life of me, I wish I could remember whether it was Paul or Rod who eventually tailed this fish for me. Paul was kind enough to take my camera and get this quick shot of me holding this monster. We also took a measurement once the fish was back in the water. She measured in at 36". I also clearly remember this fish never having jumped once during the whole fight. It doesn't surprise me at all though since she was very pregnant. She was safely released and hopefully made it upstream to spawn. This all happened during the week of October 18, 1998 to October 25, 1998. I had the pleasure of being the organizer and host for the Salar Mailing list Atlantic Salmon Conclave. It was held on the Margaree River in Cape Breton. It brought a great group of folks together for a week of fun and salmon fishing. Below is the fly that caught the pig! It was originally named the LP, short for Long Pig, by myself and the folks I was fishing with. There were probably about 20 of us including the likes of Paul Marriner, Bryant Freeman, Jerome Malloy, Rod MacLeod, Larry Tracey, Greg Estey, David Liverman, Russ Laveigne, Myles Robar, Derek Tay and Russ Gelinas. Sorry to the guys who's names are left out. I had designed this fly about a week before the fishing trip and I had not named the fly. This was my first time trying it. I did not hold much hope that the fly would produce any results due to the conditions. The water was low, the fish were holding for a long time and were "stale" as you can tell from the fish above. After fishing conventional patterns for a few days I decided to try this fly having a "what the hell nothing else is working may as well try my new fly" attitude. I hooked and landed the fish above, after about my seventh cast, during it's first fish through the pool. The name came about during a nighttime get together between all of us fishing there. It was a potluck and drinking binge like I have never seen before. Was that ever a great evening. After much loud and humorous discussion we had all decided that it would be named Long Pig after the pool I caught it in and the "pig" that I caught. I have always tended to call it my Lucky Charm because I designed it and it swiftly caught me my first real salmon. But I have settled on the LP(Long Pool) Charm.
