This is one of four generic nymphs I use. They are all tied in exactly the same manner. All you do is change the color of the dubbing for the body and the thread. Another change you can make in this design incorporates peacock herl for the thorax.
Hook:
Mustad 9672 Sizes 8 to 14
Thread:
Grey/Tan/Olive
Tail:
Imitation Lemon Wood Duck
Rib:
Small Oval Gold Tinsel
Underbody:
Non-Toxic (imitation) Lead Wire (optional)
Body:
Grey/Tan/Olive/Sulphur Dubbing
Wing case:
Turkey Wing Quill Segment
Legs:
Imitation Lemon Wood Duck (optional) see instructions.
In this pattern the tail should technically be tied short. I am not too fussy and it seems to have no effect on the effectiveness of the nymphs. In the wing case I tie it in place first. Then I coat it with Flexible cement. This holds the quill fibers together and still makes it flexible enough to bend over the thorax. It also adds to it's durability.
The underbody is used to weight the fly. You may want to do these without weight depending on your taste and conditions. The legs are totally optional. I like using them. Another good idea for legs is to pick out some of the dubbing on the underside of the thorax. A good Hare's Ear blend lends itself well to this.
