Monofilament Mayfly

Monofilament Mayfly

I am not sure if this pattern has a proper name. I call it the monofilament mayfly. It's design was suggested to me by a chap named Tony Spurrel(spelling?). Tony used to work at Mike Crosby's Tackle Shop in Halifax, Nova Scotia. He also gave me my first lessons in fly tying around 1991. Tony suggested to me one day to try a mayfly pattern tied with Maxima Chameleon tippet material for the body and Grizzly Hackle for the tail and Hackle. I have never seen another one of these flies for sale, use or anything else for that matter. But I tie and use them and man do they work. Especially in the smaller sizes. On a fishing trip one of these in size 16 caught me 10 brookies in about an hour of fishing with only a minor hatch going on.

Hook:

Mustad 94840 or equivalent Size 10-22

Thread:

Black/Danville's Spiderweb or 17/0 Uni for the Parachute.

Tail:

Grizzly Hackle Barbs

Body:

Maxima Chameleon Leader Material

Rib:

None

Wingpost:

White Yarn

Hackle:

Grizzly

Head:

Black

Instructions:

The leader material should be a diameter that fits the hook size. I use 1lb test for 18-22, 2lb test for 12 to 16 and 3lb test for size 10's. Although this fly looks like it needs a thorax it works mighty fine without one.
